Friday Fresh Fashion

28 Jun

Good Evening Glamourites!

Here are some of my favourite pins from this week and also some awesome style inspirations that I want to dive into this summer! I find that in the summer months it’s a time where you can explore new fashion trends and add that extra pop and it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. The next time you’re out shopping go a little out of your comfort zone and you might like it and surprise yourself. Thanks for taking a look xx

~HOT

What could be more summer appropriate makeup than some hot pink lips! These can work both day and night as well as with casual or formal attire. I would consider  jean shorts the “little black dress” of summer…you can not have enough! These  ones in particular have a vintage feel with the high waisted fit as well as washed colouring. There are similar shorts you can find at Levi’s here: http://us.levi.com/product/index.jsp?productId=19660826&&cp=3146849.3146909.4011526.19564916 ONLY $48

~WHITE

Speaking of dresses…this white dress is the perfect mix of short and long, sparkle but conservative with the long sleeves and daring scooped back. I would wear this to a fun BBQ with the girls or an outdoor luncheon with the family. There are some great options at Topshop for your own style, possibly this one: http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=1&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=10402652&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=208523&parent_categoryId=203984&pageSize=2000&refinements=Colour{1}~[white]&noOfRefinements=1

There’s more than chocolate

27 Jun

Hello Glamourites,

I realized most of my food posts have been all chocolate or associated with dessert  and I should really broaden that and show I do like other foods. My next big thing after chocolate would probably be breads, buns, baguettes anything bread related I can’t resist! Here is a recipe I found from Carpe Season for dinner rolls which seems not too complicated for homemade buns. Enjoy and make something tasty for yourself tonight xx

Half Time Buns

(yields 30 buns)

INGREDIENTS

3 and 3/8 tsp. active dry yeast (equal to 1 1/2 [1/4-oz] packets)

1/4 + 1/8 c. warm water*

1/2 c. vegetable shortening, melted

1 1/8 c. milk scalded**

3/4 c. cold water

1/2 tbsp. salt

3 eggs

6 c. all purpose flour

cooking spray

**To scald milk, place milk in a a heavy-bottomed sauce pan over medium heat. Stirring almost continually, heat until it begins to froth around the edges and then remove from heat.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water by stirring slightly. You are looking for the mixture to bubble and froth a bit (that’s how you know your yeast is ready for action; if this doesn’t happen, start over. Your water may have been too hot or cold). Set mixture aside.

2. In a large bowl, mix melted shortening and sugar. Add scaled milk and cold water; let sit until it is lukewarm, then add yeast mixture. Add 2 c. of flour, beating well with a mixer. Then thoroughly beat in the eggs. At this point, ditch the mixer for a wooden spoon, and stir in the remaining flour. I found that to get the flour incorporated, I had to turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a bit, using a little more flour to keep it from sticking to my hands. The dough will feel wetter and sticker and thicker than you think it should, but press on!

3. Heat oven to 200*. Turn oven off after it reaches this heat.

4. Once the flour is totally incorporated, spray your bowl with cooking spray and spread it around the bowl with a paper towel. Shape dough into a rough ball and return to your lightly greased bowl. Cover with a flour-sprinkled towel.

5. Place covered dough bowl into your heated oven. (which has been turned off)

6. Let it rise until doubled. Punch it down with oiled hands. Form dough into buns (sized bigger than a golf ball, smaller than a tennis ball) and place buns onto greased baking sheets. Cover with floured towels and let rise again until doubled (heat oven again to 200*, offed it, and let the buns rise again in the warm oven; allow for 30-45 minutes).

7. If using your oven to let the buns rise, remove from oven and preheat oven to 350*.

8. Bake buns for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

9. If serving immediately, brush tops with butter. If saving or !freezing!, save this step until ready to serve.

Topping options: butter! cinnamon-sugar! brown-sugar! garlic salt!

Party Necessities

24 Jun

Hi my Glamourites,

I thought  I should do a post on the TOP necessities that I think are crucial for a successful dinner party, cocktail party, afternoon tea or any other type of gathering. I owe a lot of credit to my mother for most of these inspirations and ideas! She is the one who has taught me everything there is to being a great hostess and throwing the perfect party!

1. CANDLES

I can’t think of a more simple thing than candles to completely change the ambience of a room just by dimming the lights to make it feel really feel special. You can buy candles just about anywhere at just about any price range and use them at almost any event.Just remember to leave a few extra minutes before the party to run around and light them all! As you will see from looking at the pictures, you can also get very creative and and make some extravagant pieces or keep it easy.

2. TABLE SETTING

If you are having a dinner party, even if it’s not a sit-down affair, it is important to have your table looking pretty. People are always drawn to the table where food and drinks are located. Particularly if you are having dinner, this is where your main event is happening and taking some extra time to add some glitz and glamour makes your event memorable. For example, buy some fun serviettes or cloth ones, create name tags for seating arrangement and have some fun with the centrepiece like using pearls or ribbons!

inspiration83. FLOWERS

While you are out and about doing errands on the day of the party, or perhaps on the day before, grab a fresh bouquet of flowers (doesn’t need to be anything fancy) or even little individual flowers. Placing flowers around your home or on the dinner table just adds something that makes it feel pretty…because what girl doesn’t love flowers!

4. MUSIC

To finish the atmosphere of a party, choosing music helps create a special ambiance that is also important to the success of your party. Be sure to pick just the right kind of music for your particular event. For myself I always think that any classical or instrumental music will fit any party as it provides a great background as well as being enjoyable to listen to! Here is an 8track playlist that I often use for my events. Give it a listen. http://8tracks.com/suzie19/piano-music

5. DESSERT

If anyone knows me then you know that I am a total dessert girl, no matter how much I have eaten I ALWAYS have room for dessert…especially if it’s chocolate! So of course what is a party without dessert! Thank you Julia…

Patio Relaxing

23 Jun

Good afternoon Glamourites!

Sometimes all you need after a long week or stressful day is a relaxing afternoon on the back deck. Pour yourself a drink, take a seat with a friend or the family, turn some tunes on and kick back for a few hours. I find with all the hussle and bussle of the day sometimes the perfect cure is to enjoy some down time just sitting. I was looking at some patio decor and layouts (plus some of these houses are amazing!) and this might give you some inspiration to spruce up your deck or spend more time outside!

The simplicity of this patio is very cleansing. You might find yourself feeling like you are somewhere in Europe with the clean white railing and the perfectly placed flower pots.

To get nice and cozy for perfect lounging,  the solution is LOTS of pillows! This bench just makes me want to lay right down with a good book. Also the fun pop of pink colour adds a nice element of excitement and warmth.Don’t forget an easy string of lights for after sunset!

patiopillows

If you are able to have a fireplace outside, do it! There is nothing better than spending summer evenings outside enjoying the sound of crackling fire or roasting marshmallows for s’mores!  The extra warmth for those cooler evenings is also a bonus. This setup also has the neutral colour pallet which is nice because it can be easily redecorated for other occasions or events. Don’t forget to add some flowers.

This last little picture of inspiration isn’t exact a patio or deck but I loved the idea of buying inexpensive candles and lining them up the length of the dock. This is especially effective for an evening party or casual dock drinks for two.

19 Jun

Hi Glamourites,

My apologies for being VERY rude and not posting for a few days, I have been away on a mini vacation and was clearly too busy relaxing and having fun to post anything…. Since I was just traveling I thought it would appropriate to post my top THREE traveling tips! Let me know as well if you have any tricks or quirks when you travel, I’d love to hear.

#ONE – Smart Carry-On

I find it extremely annoying after you check on your luggage then you still have about three different bags to carry around and onto the plane with you. I go with a basic backpack where you can stuff a surprising amount of things into and it easy to carry. The other trick I have with carry-on’s is pack your pair of heels or extra shoes that didn’t quite fit into your large luggage bag. You know, so you can be stylin’ when you get off the plane!

pinkluggage

#TWO – Don’t Drink

Now I’m not even talking alcohol…. before you board your flight, even the 2 hours prior to boarding do not drink any liquids. I don’t know about you but I hate  plane washrooms. First you have to awkwardly climb over like 2 people to get out of your seat then you have find the washroom in one of hidden closet like doors then once your in there you feel claustrophobic to the point you wish you never came. My solution is don’t drink before but once on the plane bring your 7Up or order your glass of wine and drink all! (This means you can enjoy the window seat and not be disturbed)

#THREE – Front

Sit as close to the front of the plane as possible. This allows for you to get off that plane as fast you can when you are landed. There is nothing worse than after you landed and you are still stuck in the back in your seat waiting for everyone else to get off and enjoy that fresh air.

Dessert from heaven

12 Jun

Hi Glamourites!

I found this recipe today which I am just dying to share with someone, it looks UNBELIEVABLE! This dessert may take a little bit of time to prepare and make but it’s a mouthwatering dish that will shock your guests! Give it a try when you have a few extra minutes this week…let me know how it turns out.

Dark Chocolate Tart with Blackberries and Hazelnut Praline

Chocolate Filling:

700mls cream
700g dark chocolate, chopped

Pastry:

2 cups flour
1 Tbsp dark cocoa powder
pinch of salt
1/4 cup caster sugar
150g cold butter, chopped into cubes
2-3 Tbsp iced water

Hazelnut Praline:

11/2 cups hazelnuts
200g sugar
3 tablespoons water
To serve:
2 cups fresh blackberries
200ml cream, softly whipped

Chocolate Filling:

Heat cream in a microwave or pot until almost boiling. Add chocolate and whisk until smooth. (It may need a tiny bit of extra gentle heating to melt fully). Cool for 15 minutes, then pour into pastry shell.

Pastry:

Whizz flour, cocoa, salt and sugar in a food processor. Drop in butter and pulse until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Slowly add iced water and pulse until mixture forms big clumps. Tip onto the bench and squish together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for half an hour. Preheat oven to 180˚C (350˚F).  Roll pastry out between two sheets of baking paper and line the base and sides of a 26cm tart tin. Pop in the freezer for 15 minutes. Cut out a circle of baking paper slightly bigger than the tart tin, and put in pastry case. Fill with baking beans or rice and cook for 12 minutes, remove baking paper and baking beans and cook a further 10 minutes. Pour in filling, and allow to set a little (for about 15 minutes) then refrigerate for at least six hours before serving. Top with blackberries and crumbled praline and serve with whipped cream and extra berries – and good quality vanilla bean ice cream!

Hazelnut Praline:

Preheat oven to 180˚C (350˚F) and put hazelnuts on a baking tray. Put a square of baking paper on a dinner plate ready for praline. Bake hazelnuts for 10 minutes until fragrant and colored. Remove from the oven and rub the hazelnuts between a folded tea-towel to remove the bitter skins (as much as possible). Heat the sugar and water together in a medium size, heavy based saucepan. Cook over medium heat without stirring, until the sugar has dissolved and

caramelised, turning a rich golden colour. The amount of time varies but can be more than 5 minutes. Keep an eagle eye on the caramel so that you don’t miss the magical point between golden and rich, and black and bitter. As soon as you have a golden amber liquid tip in the hazelnuts and coat in caramel. Quickly pour onto the baking paper and leave to set. Caution: do not put your fingers any where near the caramel, it is viciously hot! Once praline is cold you can whizz it in a blender or smash it into chunks with the end of a rolling pin – up to you whether you like your praline chunky or fine!

Want to create some new inexpensive artwork, or a fun craft idea with kids? Well this idea you don’t need much to have a blast and create a colourful abstract masterpiece!

To accomplish this: grab a box of crayons laying around, get the hairdryer from the bathroom, have a canvas or paper out and put the dryer on high and hold up whichever crayon colour you want to use and BAM! you have artwork. Use as many colours as you want and create whichever pattern or shape you like.

Next time you are looking for a nightstand table or side table don’t go out and spend $70-$100 bucks, grab one of the wire trash baskets, spray paint it your desired colour and turn it upside down. Voila, it’s like magic!

You know all those shopping bags that accumulate in the hall closet or under the cupboard, why not make them into a fun feature wall! This could be the simplest form of art and also show off your sense of style (where you shop)!

Hello Glamourites,

Sorry for not posing anything in the past couple days, I was busy helping with a Red Carpet Ball event which was lots of fun but took up all my time! Besides that the past week I have seen all these summer shoes that I want to run out and add to my shoe closet. I am what you could call a shoe-ahcolic….so I thought it was time to dedicate an entire post to only shoes! Enjoy and hope you like my picks…
